What Is on the Ballot in East New York
The biggest race on the ballot for many East New York residents today is the Democratic primary for New York's 7th Congressional District — the seat being vacated by retiring Rep. Nydia Velázquez, who represented parts of Brooklyn and Queens. Four candidates are running: Antonio Reynoso (Brooklyn Borough President, endorsed by Velázquez), Claire Valdez (Assembly Member, endorsed by Mayor Mamdani and the DSA), Julie Won, and Vichal Kumar. This race will shape federal representation for a district that includes parts of Brooklyn and Queens through 2028.
City Council primaries for Districts 37 (CM Sandy Nurse) and 42 (CM Chris Banks) are not on the ballot today — both council members won re-election in 2025 and are not up for re-election until 2029.
The Race That Directly Affects East New York
Assembly District 54 covers Bushwick, Cypress Hills, and East New York — which means this race is directly on the ballot for many ENY Times readers today.
Incumbent Assemblymember Erik Dilan faces a challenge from Christian Celeste Tate (also known as CCT), an anti-poverty activist and Democratic Socialist endorsed by NYC-DSA and the Working Families Party. Dilan has held the seat for nearly a decade and survived two previous DSA challenges in 2022 and 2024 (the 2024 race was decided by just 190 votes).
The contrast is clear: Dilan is backed by major unions including 1199SEIU, DC37, and the Hotel and Gaming Trades Council. Tate is backed by the same DSA network that helped elect Mayor Mamdani and is running on housing, healthcare, and anti-displacement.

What Ranked-Choice Voting Means
New York City uses ranked-choice voting in primary elections. You can rank up to five candidates in order of preference. Your first choice is counted first. If no candidate gets a majority, the lowest vote-getter is eliminated and their votes are redistributed to the next ranked choice. You do not have to rank all five — ranking just one is valid.
